Introduction to White Water Kayaking

Course dates: 4th, 5th Dec, 2004 Cost: $250 Where: North Taranaki A two day programme which aims to introduce people to the sport of kayaking on rivers. The course will start on flat water and extend to moving water, depending on the starting level of the students and the environmental conditions.

The programme will cover the following areas:

• · Knowledge of rolling techniques and buddy rescues
• · Basic strokes: forward and reverse, sweep strokes, draw and support strokes
• · Moving water skills: carved eddy turns, ferry gliding, rapid running
• · River hydraulics and understanding the hazards of moving water
• · Understanding of equipment available
• · Basic rescues on the river

Locations used will include:

• · Swimming pool
• · Lake Rotomanu or Ngamotu beach
• · Sections of the Waiwhakaiho and Waitara Rivers
